During the last few months, mostly East of Kelly Ridge Rd, we have received many calls about dead deer.
We contacted Wildlife as these deer had dirty rear ends and wanted to test these deer and they had to be dead less than 24 hours. Sad but fortunately, I was told about 2 deer and Wildlife was able to take them for testing. One test came back with the disease called “Lungworm”.
Transmission occurs when a deer ingests contaminated vegetation or water. It is fatal parasite disease that usually affects young and older deer. The infestation time is usually from late summer to early autumn and in common areas with high deer density. Most of the deaths from this disease is usually around February.
Wild populations are usually managed through habitat and population control rather than direct treatment. It is best not feeding the deer as they will congregate where they are being fed and if a diseased deer is around, the disease will be passed along. This disease does not affect humans or domestic animals unless it’s digested.
If you have a dead deer on your property, contact the Association at [email protected] to have it removed at no charge.
